Timothy Denton, B.A., B.C.L., L.L.M.

Timothy Denton is a lawyer by training who practices principally in telecommunications and Internet policy and domain name issues, with a strong concentration on explaining what the technology is and what it means.

Currently he acts as the Chairman of the Canada Chapter, Internet Society.

He conducted an inquiry under the Telecommunications Act into the state of 9-1-1 services in Canada (September-July 2013) which, in the intervening years, was followed by an increase of attention by the regulator on 9-1-1 issues.

He was appointed national commissioner of the CRTC in 2008 and served a five year term there, in which capacity he supported a reasonable regime of network neutrality, and rebuffed the attrmept to subject the Internet to Canada’s Broadcasting Act. He was elected to the Board of Trustees of the American Registry of Internet Numbers (ARIN) in September 2008 and re-elected in 2011. In 2010 he was made Chairman of the Board of Trustees of ARIN. He resigned that post as of July 31, 2013, and resigned his role as Trustee in August 2017.

Alone or with other suitable consultants, he has assisted clients with issues bearing on the regulation of telecommunications, broadcasting and cable industries. His practice also covered competition policy and copyright, Internet addressing questions

He also regularly collaborates with a network of experts in telecommunications, economics, strategic planning and management consulting.

He earned a Masters of Laws degree from the University of Ottawa’s law and technology program in 2007. He also holds a Bachelor of Civil Law (BCL) from McGill University and joined the Bar of Quebec in 1975. His undergraduate degree from the same university was in political science and philosophy.

Mr. Denton has been a consultant since 1980 and in private practice since 1988. He has worked at a number of federal government institutions: the cabinet office (the Privy Council Office), the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission in the 1970s, and again from 2009-2013, and the Office of the Minister of Communications in the latter part of the 1980s.
